Therapeutic Family Work
“Engaging with the parents and families of children and young people who have shown harmful sexual behaviours is not a luxury to be tagged onto the end of programmes of individual work with their child. Intervention with families is at least as important as individual work with the child.”
— Hackett, 2004
At Apple Orchard, we take pride in our holistic approach to care. We recognise that strengthening family relationships is a vital part of a young person’s therapeutic journey. While building and maintaining connections with family is woven throughout our work, we also understand that some families may need additional support to navigate complex dynamics or rebuild trust.
When appropriate, we offer Therapeutic Family Work as a complementary intervention alongside the young person’s individual therapy. This work is provided independently of the young person’s therapy sessions and is tailored to meet the specific needs of each family. Grounded in Systemic Family Therapy and Narrative Therapy principles, this intervention typically involves between six to ten sessions, depending on the nature and strength of existing relationships within the family.
We approach families with compassion and a strengths-based mindset, acknowledging that while challenges may exist, every family has the potential for growth. By supporting parents and carers to build confidence, self-efficacy, and healthier patterns of communication, we help lay the foundations for sustainable, positive change that benefits both the young person and their wider support network.
Please note: Therapeutic Family Work is an additional service and is costed separately. Where this support is identified as beneficial, arrangements and funding will be discussed in advance with the placing authority to ensure transparency and clarity.
Apple Orchard Outreach Service
Transitioning from a highly supervised and nurturing environment back into the community can be challenging. It is essential that this process is carefully planned, timely, and fully supported to ensure the best possible outcomes for each young person.
Where appropriate and subject to funding, we offer ongoing therapeutic support through our Outreach Service. These sessions are designed to extend the continuity of care beyond placement, providing young people with a safe space to process anxieties, reflect on new experiences and relationships, and reinforce the coping strategies and skills developed during their time at Apple Orchard.
The timing, frequency, and duration of this outreach work are tailored to the individual needs of each young person, ensuring support is meaningful, relevant, and responsive to their stage of transition.
